Secondary school is stressful. However, it does eventually finish and you’ll be left with may positive experiences and happy memories from your teenage years. Until then, there are ways to keep your cool and balance your remaining years between studying and socialising!
- Big exams coming up? Revision is essential if you want to get a good grade and improve on your current grade! Instead of spending hours at the table copying from a text book and getting stressed, try watching videos on the topics you need to revise for and make notes. Then, turn those notes into post-it notes with questions based on the topic. Get a parent or guardian to test you at random times during the day, such as during dinner or before bed.
- Keep to a strict timetable. If you want to go out with your friends one day, keep the next day free to catch up with homework. Make sure you prioritise and be aware which piece of homework needs to be done first so you can complete it before it becomes overdue.
- Make sure you get a decent amount of sleep each night. It is recommended that teenagers get a minimum of 7 and a half hours sleep on a school night, and a minimum of 9 hours on a weekend. It is also essential to eat the right things; healthy balanced meals and plenty of water will help you think clearly and improve your focus.
- If you are struggling with a subject speak to a teacher, after the lesson has finished ask if there is any ways of improving your grade. Your teacher might suggest attending Out of School Learning but this depends if they do this at your school. They might suggest websites that are useful for revision or perhaps give you past exam papers to try. Another way of getting help with a subject you’re struggling with could be to get a group of friends from your class, go to a nearby park or cafe, and help each other out.
You will get stressed – you can’t remove all stress from your life, but that doesn’t mean you can’t eliminate it. Keep in mind these four important tips to help deal with school so you can be more prepared and relaxed, and you will eventually make it out alive!
