On Monday 9th January, over 70 delegates and 20 speakers descended on Kent Science Park for Swale Youth Conference, the first of it’s kind.
Sponsored by U+I, part of the Spirit of Sittingbourne, as well as support from local Cllrs Mike Baldock, Roger Truelove and George Samuel the conference successfully shared the views and issues affecting young people with professionals who hold the responsibility to make change.
Planned and delivered by a group of Swale Young People’s Young Ambassadors the day had real meaning with left many reflecting on the services available to young people in Swale.
Speakers included the MP for Sittingbourne & Sheppey, Gordon Henderson, CEO of Youth Employment UK, Laura-Jane Rawlings, and 23-year-old Jack Parsons, CEO of Yourfeed.
Patrick Cantellow, CEO of Swale Young People said: “This event has been fully planned by 6 Young Ambassadors, who have all gained valuable experience in event management, as well as going outside of their comfort zone speaking in front of a large group of people. The feedback has been amazing, and has certainly inspired us to do the same again for 2018.”
Young Ambassador, Demi, said: “It was an opportunity for young people to have a voice and to be listened to. We was all given out options to speak about something we all felt passionate about.”
Dave Boulding, Youth Programme Coordinator at SATEDA, said: “It’s been a long while since I came away from an event with so much interesting stuff to think about, and feeling so encouraged. It was fantastic to hear from yourself and all the young people about what they’re passionate about, how they’ve overcome struggles, and their opinions on what young people in Swale are facing. As someone who works with young people who’ve had a hard start in life, and are often quite ‘troubled’, it was so inspiring to see a group of young people who have aspirations for themselves, and care about helping others in their community.”
